DACA Recipients Future Uncertain

Immigration Lawyer Yanci Montes says, “ All of the recipients of DACA are left in a Limbo as DACA which is known as the deferred action for childhood arrivals was an executive action that President Obama made back in June of 2012”. Throughout the UC and Cal State system dreamers have been advised legally about their rights.

UCLA Student Leticia Bustamente says, “ That makes me feel a little bit of hope cuz after the election happened I was pretty scared, but seeing that all the campuses are uniting gives me a little bit of hope it makes me a little bit safer, and makes me feel more comfortable being on campus and being undocumented”.

The Cal State and UC system are urging undocumented students who are studying abroad to come back to the U.S by January 19th. DACA students are in danger of not completing courses, and losing out on classes that have been already paid by student loans, also transportation and housing costs. A letter sent by the state university to campus study abroad administrators says, unless they return by January 19th of next year, there’s no guarantee that they will be allowed to return home. The letter added, there’s a realistic possibility that their entry will be denied.

Lizbeth Mateo an Immigrant rights activist says, “I was hoping that all that passion that I’ve seen in the last few days with people marching and walking out that it actually translates into actual organizing with their parents with their communities, so that they can know what their rights are so that they can defend themselves and their communities especially the people that are the most vulnerable”.

UCLA student Elia Ricks says, “ You’re here in this country legally why are you fighting, and I’m just like for sometimes you have to be the ally and you have to be the voice of people who cannot be the voices for themselves ”.

SEIU Youth Organizer Yamilex Rustrian says, “As dreamers we are now providing for our families something that before we weren’t able to do, and now that we can with Social Security numbers, but it’s also very scary to know that the day Donald Trump actually gets sworn in he can have that power of overturning this action”.
